Saturday, October 11, 2008Another night, another show.
Purple Orchid, El Segundo, CA
This show took place at the Purple Orchid Tiki Bar. As the name implies, the club interior is decorated with tikis, bamboo, ... This is a very nice club to hang out in and listen to music. The owners of the club like surf music, and bring in surf bands on a regular basis. I have also seen the owners of the club at other surf music shows. While this is a small local club, there is usually a reasonable sized audience for the music.
I do have a slight problem recording at this club. The stage is small, so I am unable to put my microphones on it. Therefore I place my microphones in front of and slightly to the side of the stage. The stage is near the front door, so there is a lot of traffic. This means that I need to be concerned with people bumping into my microphones. In addition, there is free space in front of the stage where people like to dance. Again, I need to watch for people accidentally bumping into my microphones. Even so, most of the time I am able to get good recordings.
http://www.mediamerlin.com/?q=node/3 Rod and the Tonemasters lineup for tonight, 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drum and no vocals. Although they did use the microphone between tunes to talk with the audience. Rod and the Tonemasters is a rockabilly band that is also a surf instrumental band. For this evening, they only played surf instrumentals. Their set was split between covers of traditional surf instrumental tunes and their original surf instrumental tunes. While they were not interested acquiring a copy of this nights performance, Rod did remember me from the last time I audio recorded him (a few months ago) and he didn't mind if I recorded him again.
http://www.chromeoxide.com/board/ The Boardwalkers lineup for tonight, 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drum and no vocals. Their regular drummer was unavailable tonight, so Marty Tippens, who was their regular drummer for a few years filled in. This is a band that I am very familiar with, as I have been recording them for a number of years, and I maintain their web site. All three musicians have been or currently are in a number of surf as well as non-surf bands. While the Boardwalkers are considered surf music, and they do play some traditional surf tunes, their sound is more psychedelic than surf. They play mostly original material, however, their encore of the night included Jimi Hendrix's Third Stone. This is a band that likes me to record all their shows. So, I had no problem with permission to record them.
