Mr. T's Bowl, Highland Park, CA

Another night, another show.

As the name implies, Mr. T's Bowl is a bowling alley. Or at least it used to be. And kinda sorta still is. Their liquor license is only good for a bowling alley, so once a week, they open the lanes for a hour, and allow people to go bowling. The rest the of time, the lanes are curtained off and serve as the backstage area for the bands who play there.

Like most store fronts, Mr. T's is much deeper than it is wide. So the way it works out is, if you come walking in from the front entrance, you would see the side of the stage (if it wasn't blocked off). They have built a permanent stage, and permanent sound booth (for the mixing board), and a reasonable P.A.

Since I have recorded here a number of times before, the sound man, Arlo, remembered me and helped me out however he could.

While there were at least 4 bands playing tonight, I only came to record one of them. http://www.myspace.com/doublenaughtspycar Double Naught Spy Car. Their lineup was 1 guitar / lap steel guitar, 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drum and no vocals. Well, unless you count humming along to a tune while performing. Afterwards, the bass player was telling me that he had fun doing that, and may well do it again. They play all original music. Which may not grab you the first time or two that you listen to them, but it is good and does grow on you. Even though this was a late performance on a Tuesday night, there was a good sized crowd. This may be because all the members of this band are in other bands, and have not been performing very frequently. While I didn't ask permission to record them, I have recorded them a number of times in the past and therefor didn't exect any problems with recording them tonight.
