Purple Orchid, El Segundo, CA

Another night, another show.

This show took place at the Purple Orchid Tiki Bar. As the name implies, the club interior is decorated with tikis, bamboo, ... This is a very nice club to hang out in and listen to music. The owners of the club like surf music, and bring in surf bands on a regular basis. I have also seen the owners of the club at other surf music shows. While this is a small local club, there is usually a reasonable sized audience for the music.

I do have a slight problem recording here. The stage is small, so I am unable to put my microphones on it. Therefore I place my microphones in front of and slightly to the side of the stage. The stage is near the front door, so there is a lot of traffic. This means that I need to be concerned with people bumping into my microphones. In addition, there is free space in front of the stage where people like to dance. Again, I need to watch for people accidentally bumping into my microphones. Even so, most of the time I am able to get good recordings.

http://www.wadadliriders.com/ First up, was the Wadadli Riders. For this tour, the band line up is not their regular line up. Two of the members (bass-wife, drums-husband) were from Italy and moved to Antigua (West Indies) (regular line up). The keyboards still lives in Italy (brother to the drummer), and is not a regular member of the band. Although he was a member of the band when it was located in Italy. The guitar was played by Daddy-O Grande (from Los Straightjackets), wearing his mask, and making the announcements in Spanish. Whatever gear the band didn't provide, the Insect Surfers provided (the Insect Surfers bass player was late, so the Wadadli Riders used one of the Insect Surfers guitarist amp instead) They played a variety of cover tunes as well as originals. They all speak a reasonable amount of English, and when I asked, they said the didn't mind if I record them.

http://www.insectsurfers.com/ Next (and last) up, was the Insect Surfers. Their lineup started out as 1 drummer, 1 bassist, 2 guitarists, and no singer. In the spirit of the show must go on, the Insect Surfers started out playing this night with one of their backup drummers as the only replacement. The Insect Surfers have a policy of having backup musicians for everyone except the leader. Which became very important this night. After playing about 45 minutes, the club announced that the second guitarist had a call from his wife. Turns out there was a family emergency, and he immediately grabbed his guitar, and took up the offer of the leader of the band to bring back the rest of his gear. At this point, the bass player picked up the guitar, the drummer picked up the bass guitar, and the drummer from the prior band, sat in on drums. With this line up, they played a few cover tunes, one original tune and called it a night.

And for those who don't know, I am the official audio recorder and sound archivist for Insect Surfers. I have recorded most of their shows since 1996. My recording of a live performance in June 2004 has become their Lyve In The Valley Of The Sun which was released in time for the bands 20th anniversary. These days, I also manage and host their web site, I manage their live show announcements as well as helping with merchandise sales.
