International Surfing Museum Surfin' Sundays
Surf Museum, Huntington Beach, CA
As you might have guessed, since the Surfing Museum is putting on shows at the Huntington beach pier, their location is in Huntington Beach. When they are not putting on shows on the pier, they are putting on shows in the parking lot of the museum. It is not a big lot, it normally only holds 5 or 6 cars. However, it is big enough for a band to set up, and to put out chairs and popup tents to help keep the sun off the audience.
Today's show was a little bit different. The taper section was out in full force. When I arrived, there was already a taper who had 4 microphones on a dual connected microphone stand lined up in front of the band.
http://www.thebreakaways.com/ The Breakaways has the semi-standard drums, bass, two guitars and no vocals. They did use the microphone to talk with the audience and announce song titles. Most of their set consisted of original songs, with a few standard covers. In the past the Breakaways usually paid for recordings. This time they didn't, but only because they had already hired the other taper with the 4 microphones to record them. If their recording turns out to be as good as they hope, the current plan is to turn it into a live CD. I wonder if they decided to try for a live CD because they have like my prior recording and were hoping that they would be able to mix / master more than my 2 channel recordings allow. I believe they like my recordings, as they have paid me to make recordings for bands that didn't request recordings.
Superwave was the second (final) band of the day. The lineup is again the the semi-standard drums, bass, two guitars and no vocals. They did use the microphone to announce song titles and talk with the audience, but not quite as much as the Breakaways. I had not seen this band perform before, although I had seen the members in other bands including the Halibuts and Deoras. When I asked the band for permission to record, the leader recognized my name as he is a fan of the Insect Surfers, and I recorded the Insect Surfers recent live CD as well as maintain the Insect Surfers web site. The drummer in the band had brought along an audio recorder which he set up on a mic stand in front of the band. While I may be getting better audio quality in my recording, many bands are not concerned with quality other than the ability to listen back to how they sound and how they played.
